This is a difficult age to buy books for because reading ability varies very widely at this age. Information books with lots of pictures are a good choice so are books connected to the latest children's film. Roal Dahl stories on a CD or story tape would be good for listening to in bed or in the car.
This is a difficult age as programmes on Cbeebies are a bit young and programmes on CBBC are a bit too grown up for 6 year olds. They like Tracey Beaker; Dr Who; Sarah Jane Mysteries; Chucklevision, Simpsons and Scooby Doo.
6 year olds like chart music. If you wanted to get them a cd as a present choose a compilation album of lots of different groups. The most recent Pop Junior and Pop Party are going to be well received.
6 year olds like pick n mix sweets, they like a big bag full of lollies and chews rather than a box of chocolates. They like bubble gum. 6 year olds like chocolate but generally not dark chocolate. A chocolate santa or car or football would be excellent choices if you want to buy sweets.
6 year olds like computer games, choose the latest game for extra credibility among friends. They prefer adventure and racing games rather than fighting ones.
Clothes are generally a bad choice for a present for 6 year olds, unless it's dressing up clothes for fantasy play, princess and fairy costumes, or Dr Who or super heros are winners.
Microphones, karaoke machines and CD players are good present ideas for 6 year olds.
The latest sticker album and some packets of stickers would be a good present. So would a sports drink bottle with a picture of Dr Who on it, as most children need to take a drink bottle of water to school with them each day.

The board games Guess Who, Guess Where, Operation and Twister are all good fun games that will be played over and over again.
