This much we know!
I have been wet wrapping my son for 3 years... This much we know...
I have been using wet wraps every night for 3 years, at first I found it impossibly difficult and very time consuming and I used to dread doing it. But very soon it became manageable and now it is just part of our bedtime routine.
If your child suffers from severe eczema and you've just been told that you need to start wet wrapping, I hope that you'll be able to find some help and reassurance from my experiences.
Thank goodness no one expects us to wet wrap our eczema sufferers using long bandages! That was my main fear when wet wrapping was first mentioned, although I would have done anything to help at that point as my son was totally covered in eczema.
The Wet Wraps are made out of bangage material but they are clothes so they are reasonably quick to put on. My son has a wet wrap top which is long sleeved and goes right up to the neck. He has leggings in the same thin bandage material, and socks and mittens which have a hole in them for his thumbs to stick out of. I've often wished they made balaclavas but when I've asked I've been told they are made for babies. They're very stretchy and come in different sizes.
I wet wrap my son every night as soon as I've dried him after his bath. I apply hydrocortisone to any patches of eczema and then cover him in diprobase cream. I put a pair of wet wrap leggings and a wet wrap vest in a sink of warm water, then as soon as I've put his cream on I squeeze most of the water out of the wet wrappings and put them on him like clothes. They're a snug fit and it is sometimes a bother to get them over his head! I then put a dry wet wrap vest top and a pair of dry wet wrap leggings on top of the wet ones. Then I put him in his special eczema pyjamas. Job done!
Yes, without a doubt! It enables the skin to soak up more of the Diprobase. My son's skin feels lovely and smooth after wet wrapping.
At first I used to be terrified of having to miss a night of wet wrapping for fear of his eczema flaring up, but if you have to miss a night occasionally it will be ok. It is not advisable to wet wrap when your child has a fever so you can't wet wrap then.
I really hope that my experience can be of some use to you if there is any thing you'd like to ask contact me using the contact page.
